So last Friday I had a lunch out with officemates just a block away from our building. as we crossed the street to get back to the office building I happen to see this man with his child. They seemed to be asking help or money from the group of people outside just smoking / chit chatting. I saw his face and his eyes looked so troubled and lonely. I have seen so many people ask for money. But his eyes, they sort of haunt me and I can see he looked really desperate. It is true that you can see through a person's soul through their eyes. I felt bad I was not able to give to him, I well, thought he truly needed the help, unlike the others who are well, just asking for easy money. So my day went at work, i finished up and went out of the office few minutes past 6PM. So I usually just walk going home from the office and it was kind of traffic that night (Friday). I was crossing the street and to my peripheral view, I saw the same man asking for some change among the cars in the traffic. I was halfway across the street and as soon as I saw him I went back, reached for my pocket and gave him the bill i took out from my pocket. I did not hear anything if he did say something to me, but because we are in the middle of the street, I just chose to hand it over and quickly cross the street. It made me feel a bit relieved I was able to give him something. I really saw how sad his eyes were. He seemed hopeless but he must be trying to endure it all because he has a small kid to feed. I don't know his whole story but i pray for him to have it better soon. Have you guys, ever met someone in the streets, at the mall, in church etc and by just looking at them, or when you come to see them eye to eye... do you feel their pain or feel how they are? It is probably the first time for me to feel someone (a total stranger) else's pain through their eyes, no words spoken but it was through and through.

thank you marguicha for your response. i understand you and a lot of people do help in the right avenue. Yes we do that too especially if the help we give is of high value. but for the day to day people i meet on the streets, etc i usually do not give anymore on beggars but it was a bit different with this man. He looked really helpless and sad. I saw it in his eyes and I felt that need to do something even little amount for him.

Hi May! thank you for your response. That's true as well! People even would use kids or babies and bring them as they ask for money in dangerous locations like in the middle of the road in traffic. I rarely give them any money as it looked like it is being operated by bigger syndicate. But it was really different with this man. I mean I really saw his need when i had the chance to look at him in the eye.

Yes, there have been a few times when a beggar's demeanor and look touched me to the point that I helped by being a bit more generous.

Thanks Hope! I guess sometimes it depends on the person asking for help. but of course let us still be very aware of our surroundings and of these people who might take advantage. =)

It is very loving of you to do so. I hope he can find a suitable job to support him and his son.

Its true right? its like looking into their eyes, even if it was a few seconds, I was touched and felt as if he does truly need the help.

It was nice of you to give it to him but personally, I don't give to them anymore. There was a car in front of me at the light one time, she handed him an apple because his sign said hungry, as soon as she drove away he tossed it over his shoulder onto the ground. I have also seen some park and walk up to the corner to beg for money so I give my money to shelters.
