Last month I looked at some big hits by the late, great singer/songwriter Allen Toussaint. I'm back at it again, this time highlighting Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member John D. Loudermilk. Despite the fact that his career was labeled "folk" and many of his songs were covered by country acts, he had a number of songs hit the pop charts. Here's one of them.
#9: Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye
The list of people who've covered this song can reach from here to Nashville. I first heard it, being raised on country music, by Eddy Arnold, who had a #1 country version. However, it was also recorded by rock, R&B, pop, and other country acts. The biggest pop version came in 1967 by a group called the Casinos, who took it to #4 on the pop charts. I've also heard Johnny Rivers' version. James Brown even covered this!!
Loudermilk could cover a lot of bases, and this classic proves it.

I didn't know the song until I heard it then it was oh yeah that oldie but goodie standard.
