I love a good demon possession, exorcism or 'end of the world' flick so when The Cloth surfaced on my list of movies that fit into my horror scheme of things I added it to my view list. I have to admit, I was hooked after the intro and even through the somewhat strange opening credits. I figured that if Danny Trejo had committed to it, it coulnd't be that bad. Man, I got snookered. Eric Roberts is the only other "star" in this but his career has been so low=brow that the three minutes of screen time in this movie was pushing it for him.
When you look at the bones of this movie it does have everything that it needs to be a hit or at the very least something that you would admit to watching when you are hanging out with friends. This is the internet so I am hiding behind a screen to avoid getting pelted with handfuls of popcorn.
"The Cloth" does offer you the basics of a demonic possession / end of the world through the gates of hell. In fact, on paper it has the perfect combination of sins and scenarios but the end point / visual result leaves a LOT to be desired in some parts. The acting is .. well ... sloppy and not very well rehearsed. When Jason starts speaking Latin you can actually hear the scratching sound of skin crawling. Imagine someone from deep Texas trying to speak French proper but only having four hours to learn it. Yeah, feel my pain.
The Step By Step Plan For A Demonic Possession Movie:
1 token lipstick lesbian scene
The telltale priest
The reluctant warrior
The Keeper of Knowledge
The Devil incarnate
Optional: possessed humans dispatched by the warrior
Yeap, that's all you need to know. The devil wants to conquer the planet (again) but there is a secret sect (again) that have pledged to prevent that from happening. People die, people fall in love, the darkness is vanquished and everyone goes home with a couple dollars in their pocket.

I like Danny Trejo, but so far his movies after Spy Kids all suck
