Should Prisoners Be Allowed to Vote?

When Trump took office he appointed a group to look into voter fraud. For some reason he's convinced that dead people and illegals are voting in our elections. Whatever!
I disregarded this initial “official act” as POTUS and since he's been busy doing so much other stuff I had forgotten about it.
Then I came across an article in the Huffington Post about inmates being allowed to register to vote.
QUOTE: “Someone in jail is likely completely eligible to vote …”
I have to tell you this is a shocking revelation to me.
I didn't know people in jail could vote!
I was told once that people in prison had lost the rights of citizens. Not their human rights. I mean … you can't treat them like they're animals. But rights like … voting. They couldn't do that!
Who told me that and why did I believe that? Once upon a time when I was a little girl I remember one of the sisters saying this. Yes. I went to a Catholic school and nuns have these kinds of conversations with 10 year-olds.
I didn't do a fact check of what my teacher said because … frankly what she said made perfect sense to me. These people have broken the laws. That's how they ended up jail. When they chose to break the law, they gave up such rights as … VOTING!!
So? We're not talking about people being arrested for protesting and stuff like that. We're talking about lawbreakers. People who broke the laws of this country and are doing time for the crime.
You're saying that prisoners or inmates can VOTE??!!
I'm sorry. Perhaps my teacher was wrong but I agree with her.
I don't think lawbreakers should be allowed to vote.
What do you think?
I'll bet this matter isn't even discussed in any other country but America!
A group in Chicago is working to extend the franchise to people detained in jail, many of whom have no idea they can vote.

Not being allowed to vote should be one of the punishments for being convicted of a crime. Once their debt to society is paid, their voting right is restored.

I know they are not allowed to vote; they lost this right when they committed an offense.
