How do you check a coconut when you buy it?

Hello my friends. Last night I bought two coconuts and today I decided to crack them open. The first coconut I cracked open had water inside it which is good, and it also looked good on the inside (it was a nice white). But the second one I cracked open did not have water inside and its color was not that bright and it smelled a little bad so I threw it in the trash. Should I check the coconuts to see if there is water inside them before buying them next time? I mean, should I shake them and listen to the sound to see if there is any water inside it? Is this how the coconut should be checked? Thanks.

As I have many coconut trees in my yard, I can tell from experience that shaking them is the best way to check

i think you're supposed to thump them to see what sound they make.

young coconut has more water than older coconut. So, when the coconut is shaken, raise your ear to the coconut. If there is a sound of whisking water in it, it means the coconut is still very fresh. Meanwhile, if there is no sound from the coconut or the sound of whisking sounds weak (the water is a little), do not buy the coconut because it is an old coconut.

I had thought all the coconuts were good as long as they were whole. I didn't even know some coconuts have no water. I should shake it next time.
