My car burned itself out!

My car wasn't quite this bad, but it was bad enough

I just traded in my Honda Accord. I bought it new in 1997, and it has given me 21 years of faithful service. But it finally succumbed to burnout, and I had to trade it in for a new one. When I say it burned itself out, I don't mean anything quite as dramatic as the photo that accompanies this post might suggest. But they say where there's smoke there's fire, and the last time I drove my car there was plenty of smoke. I was going to the library to return a book, and was almost there when I saw clouds of smoke coming from the engine. I made it to the library, and hoping that the car was just overheating, put some water in the radiator. But when I started home, it quickly began smoking again. I had to pull into a parking lot and call AAA for a tow. At the dealership they told me that several internal parts had literally melted and melded together. They said they had never seen anything like it. I still don't know what caused it, but the car was (literally) toast. Fixing it would cost much more than a 21-year-old car was worth. In fact, when I traded it in they would only give me $100 on it. So, goodbye old friend. After 21 years, I will miss you. I wish I knew you were going to car heaven, but I suspect your destination will really be a junk yard. Photo credit: Shah rukh khan via Wikimedia (Public Domain)

Ah, but isn't the junkyard car heaven? It's where cars go to be resurrected as new things. We've owned 2 Honda's, an Accord (2000-2015/250K+ miles) and a CRV (2005-2016/160K+ miles). Our youngest son now has the CRV. Last summer he drove it to Texas and back and last week he drove it to Chicago and back. It still runs great and looks good. I just wish Honda made a pickup truck worthy of the name that could pull a camper.

My Accord also had 250K+ miles. It finally reached the point where it wasn't worth it to fix problems. At the end it had an oil leak that would have cost more to fix than the car was worth. So, I guess it was time to move on.

@RonElFran Yes, they do reach that point, don't they. I only hope the CRV we handed down to my son lasts him through grad school.

You got some fine service from that car. 21 years was a good run.

Absolutely! I almost never saw other cars on the road as old as mine.

When we were in Australia we had a second car that was about 20 years old. We used it for a year and then sold it before we came off.

Oh boy that is really distressing to see your cars go into flames. I guess some parts started to melt a long time ago and was crying to have it checked but you ignored it until it caught fire already. Anyway, its time to move on and maybe look for a new replacement for now that he is truly gone.

Wow, your good with cars. I mean 21 years. We never could keep a car that long, with winters around here.

What are you going to get this time around? My Nissan Xterra is 10-years-old but running well. I put about $3000 into it this year. If it gives me another 11 years, I'll be quite happy.

I'm not driving much these days, so I bought a used Buick Regal that has just 44,000 miles. But I still miss my Honda!

Oh No! I feel very bad if some thing happens like this , In fact I am having a 1986 Suzuki Car which is running nicely, but then the 18 years old Matiz is throwing lot of smoke from the exhaust! I can't part with my old cars though I have the recent ones with me! You can say that it is my weakness! I really felt bad for your 21 years old companion!
