Superbugs are bacteria which are resistant to commonly used antibiotics. MRSA and VRE are examples of such superbugs. Research has found that improper disposal of antibiotics and other such bio-active substances can help in breeding such superbugs. Expired medicines should not be thrown in dustbins, but handed over to your local health center for disposal.

Wow, just read the article, so let me make sure I understand this right, their talking about disposal in antibiotics in people's households , not the companies that make them ,right. I know in the USA, people just throw them in the trash to. It is kind of scary to think all of that is seeping into the water.

Yes, antibiotics are only prescribed by your doctor's if you have infections or as prophylaxis to prevent infections. You should complete the entire course of antibiotics, so there is no question of any any antibiotics remaining for you to dispose. The problem comes when you prematurely decide to stop taking the antibiotics against the advice of doctor. In that case you are left with some antibiotics which you will need to dispose.

@amirev777 Oh yes, that's were it becomes a problem, like in the article, because of people not taking all of them, they start filling better and don't think they need all of them.
