Everyone has a lineage. Some of you have dug into your ancestry to find out who your ancestors were and where they came from. You want to know their stories, and how you came to be where you are today.
Digging into your ancestry can be exciting and fun. You might find some surprises on your family tree, with colorful characters and interesting lives. Or you might want to leave some of your ancestors in the closet, buried forever.
Whoever is on your family tree, doesn’t really matter, does it? The only thing it did, was bring you to the place you are today, with the parents and siblings you have, and I’m certain some of them you’d like to put in a closet and forget about. However, they will still be your relatives and ancestors to your children.
Jesus had an interesting lineage. This is the second lineage, the first being recorded in Matthew’s gospel. If you look at that lineage, you will see it’s different from the one you see here. Why is that? Both say he is the son of Joseph.
According to the culture of the day, a person’s ancestry was counted only through the man, not the woman, even though everyone knows you have a mother and father.
So, whose lineage is mentioned here, and whose is mentioned in Matthew?
First, you need to know that Jesus is the Son of God, and will rule as KING of Kings and LORD of Lords when he returns. He is the son of a king. Therefore, the line of kings would be Mary’s lineage, not Joseph’s. As you read through the names of this lineage, you will notice the only two kings mentioned are David and Solomon. It is at Solomon where the lineage deviates and doesn’t follow the kings. Therefore, the lineage represented here is Joseph’s, not Mary’s.
You will find Mary’s lineage in Matthew 1:1-17. It starts with Abraham and goes to Jesus’ birth.
As Christians, you know there is another lineage bringing you into direct sonship with the Father, and Jesus Christ, his Son.
When you accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, you become an heir with Jesus Christ, with all the privileges of a son or daughter.
Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Therefore, your lineage is the same as Jesus’ when you accept him as Savior and Lord, and you have the right to go to the Father at any time with your prayers and petitions, and he will hear you, and treat you as his son or daughter, just as he does his Son, Jesus.
Have you received the adoption of sons, as an heir with Jesus Christ? You can have all the rights and privileges as a son or daughter when you accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord.
Let’s pray: Father, thank you for making me an heir with Jesus Christ. Help me remember that I have the same privileges as your child, as Jesus does, and I can come to you at any time with anything, and you will hear me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
