What began as an assumed "gopher hole" has become, over the last month, the "Black Hole" of a small Nova Scotia town park. It continues to grow daily and is now over 30 metres/ 100 feet wide. It sucks in trees, picnic tables and whatever else is in its path. Scientists still don't know its depth, but it has swallowed a 40 metre high spruce tree. This is scary. It continues to grow and no one knows when it will stop.

An unpredictable sinkhole in a Nova Scotia park that has already swallowed up large trees and some picnic tables is now at least 38 metres in diameter.

It has reached a main artery that goes through the town. The road may have to close soon.

There must be some corroding stuff that eats up the earth. Hope they will soon find out and look for remedies which I doubt there will be any. Really scary.

@Starmaiden I have read about sink holes happening in Florida quite often. It even swallowed a man
Rescue crews still can't reach a suburban Tampa man who vanished into a sinkhole that opened under his bedroom.

@allknowing That must be what a pool of quicksand is. A sinkhole opening up. They can be very huge and very unpredictable.

No. It is natural erosion of the earth underneath. This is how lakes are formed I believe. They begin with a sinkhole.

@amadeo No. It is in the park, but the main road is nearby. Authorities have it roped off so people don't get too near to it. Hopefully people have common sense that they'll use.

WOW! Hope the sinkhole stops growing ASAP! Maui had a gigantic sinkhole because of rains from Lane... been in the news. I wonder if UN has help for Nova Scotia about this?

Me too. This is the first sinkhole I've ever heard of that grows. In Florida, sinkholes are known to swallow a house!!

@Courage7 It has another 160 kms of ground to cave in before it reaches me. I'm safe...for now.
There is an underlying layer of gypsum underneath the town that is affected. Gypsum rock dissolves in water over time. That is what the geologists believe is happening. Hopefully it stops soon.

The ground seems like it is now so wet and unstable..I am surprised they are not developing here. I think it will dry out soon with the coming fall though. I hope the sinkhole in your area, doesn't cause anymore damage.

Yes. The community center and playground are off limits. It grew 3 meters overnight.

That looks awful especially since it looks pretty close to some buildings and the road. I hope they are diverting traffic from that area in case the whole road followed the tree in.
