Spoiler alerts - 2002 Harper Collins. Though a twelve book series The Darren Shan Saga is really four separate quartets of books linked together. Darren is revelling in his new status as a vampire prince, but his peace and quiet is interrupted by the arrival of the strange Mister Destiny. He has grave news. The evil rival vampire race, the Vampaneze have been looking for a chosen one figure for some generations. This Chosen One will lead them to victory over other vampires, and the conquest of the human race. Mr. Destiny has reason to believe that the Chosen One has now been found. He orders Mr. Crepsley, Darren Shan, and the dwarf Vancha Marsch to find and destroy the Vampaneze messiah. He advises them that he has a prophesy in which they will clash with the Vampaneze Chosen One three times, and that at least one of the three heroes will definitely die in the ensuing battles. The chase then begins in earnest. The trail quickly leads them to a town familiar from book two, and once again Darren is united with Debbie, the girl he fell in love with then. Their adventure and her endangerment in that story has been erased from her memory. Slowly however, Darren enlightens her as to what happened, as she again becomes embroiled in the danger that surrounds Darren. The biggest surprise however is the identity of the Vampaneze chosen one, for it is another of Darren Shan’s former acquaintances, Steve. It will be recalled that Steve had appeared in the first book, wanting desperately to be a vampire, but being turned down for being too evil. He has joined the Vampaneze and seeks his revenge on Darren and his allies. Steve takes Debby as a hostage and orders the heroes to start running because his army will soon be in pursuit of them. Darren and friends have no choice but to flee, surrounded by enemies. Here the eighth book, ends. Arthur Chappell
