Hi mylotters. I was wondering today about the practice followed by people at large to toss a coin for deciding who goes first in sports or any other activity. I don't know it's significance. Do tell me if you know it.

Coin tossing or flipping is an age old practice to choose between two alternatives, which gives an equal opportunity to both parties having dispute for whatsoever reason or motive. It gives equal probability to both parties in question, which gives it a title of one of the best dispute resolution system, which is fair in terms of providing odds to both sides involved. This practice is said to be known to ancient Chinese people and also to English people. Today this practice is used in most of the famous sports like Cricket, Tennis, Baseball, Football and other games as well.

A coin is the commonest two-sided object in most people's pockets and it's conveniently marked differently on each side, so it's a very easy (and ancient) method of randomly deciding the result of a binary outcome.

Probably its the most easiest way to decide on 2 alternatives and come to a conclusion. Its an age old practice I believe which is still relevant and is used in lot of major sporting events.
