Any tips on getting sound sleep at night?

These days I am having difficulty in getting sound sleep at night. It takes at least an hour to doze off after I hit the sack. A friend had advised me to have a glass of milk before going to bed, but that hasn't helped.

I often play some music when I sleep, it's helpful. If you are tired during the day, you will fall asleep easily at night.

These days i listen to Gayatri Mantra, i sleep well. Previously i used to listen to lullabies

I have heard that Gayatri mantra should not be recited at night. I also do recite Gayatri mantra, but only during day.

I have this problem too, but it's mainly my fault. I barely find time for myself and that's why I go to sleep very late, usually after watching some movie on tv. If you want to have a better sleep, you need to stay away from food before going to sleep (at least 2 hours from your last meal), no tv, play some music if you like or read some book (in a seated position preferably). Just try to relax your brain before going to bed.
