I bought some new cross stitch patterns online, but can't use them because none of the programs on my computer seem to "want" to let me open them.
Looking the problem up, it is evidently because these are ".pat" files, and I have no idea what that is or what sort of program I should use to open them.
Has anyone ever heard of a .pat file or how to open it (I'm thinking .pat is short for pattern, but that doesn't help).

.PAT generally means a 'pattern file' of some kind. There are a number of applications which use files with this extension and it depends, of course, on the application as to what the file actually is, what it contains and what will recognise and open it.
As these are cross-stitch patterns, the application which uses these files is likely to be one related to that, naturally. I would first look at the site you bought them from. Does it tell you anywhere which program the files were created for or with? There ought, at least, to be a mention of the name of the program, if not a link where you can download it.
Here is a list and description of applications which use the file extension '.pat'. Only one of them, if any, will be relevant to the files you have. I hope that it helps!
