The first thing that you learn, when you learn how to sew, is to make an apron. It can be different for you, but for me in my country and my area, it was done like that. Now I am showing my daughter how to sew.
We have begun with , yes , an apron. I had a pattern that I bought about 6 years ago and never used it. It is a " retro" pattern, she had the choice of 5 different styles.
She has chosen one with plaits that tie at the waist. With a nice cloth that is not too thin with good colour mixter in it. She is looking forward to keep working at it. She is learning well.

I actually didn't make an apron until years after learning to sew, My first project was a pillowcase....followed by pyjamas.

In our family living class, my first project was rather complicated for a novice seamstress. I made a sports shirt for my father. It had a collar and short sleeves with a button-down front. I'm sure it was awful, but my father actually wore it one time. That was real love.

Here something I don't think I've ever told you. My first ever sewing project was a denim vest. I think I got the highest mark in the class for that project granted we were all guys with the exception of one girl. Most of the guys told "bachelor's living" for the cooking class. Oh, they weren't there to learn to cook. They were there to eat.
