My friend always discussed about his promotion in upcoming appraisal cycle

In my company, appraisal cycle ends in coming october and my close friend is expecting promotion in this cycle and he keeps talking about that only whenever we talk. Even i am also expecting promotion but i am not thinking about that too much like him. He always wants to show that he is working very hard in his team and he is only working well. But , in my opinion if you are good then you should not do show off. Even i told him that dont think too much about promotion but he us not understanding. What you suggest guys.....
