Does a trip to Mars sound like a good idea?

A recent survey of a representative sample of people in the UK has shown that 50% of men and 30% of women would be happy to go on a return trip to Mars. When asked if they would consider a one-way trip, 40% of men said that they would definitely or probably want to go, and the same was true of 20% of women. In other words, the difference between the two sets of figures was 10% for both men and women, thus showing that - in this matter if no other - it is not the case that women necessarily have more sense than men! But is it such a good plan? The voyage would take six months and be fraught with danger, not least the continual bombardment from cosmic rays that could mean that you would arrive with incipient cancer. And once you were there you would find yourself in a desert with nothing to do apart from look at it!

I've never even been on a plane so I couldn't see myself on a spaceship - let alone to somewhere like that!

That makes sense to me. Like you I am a far-from-frequent flyer (11 times in a plane in 66 years).

@asfarasiknow My longest flights were to Moscow in 1977 and Baltimore in 2006 - those being my first and last flights.

Nope I would not like to. It'll be wasting years of life to travel to dessert which doesn't make sense to me.

I am willing to move to mars if there is an established colony but not on the early days.

I still have not seen most of what Earth has to offer so why would I go to Mars?

I would not like to be a part of this till I am 85. I would like to live my life fully before taking such uncertain journey.

But you might go at 85? That's a possibility that had not even entered my mind, but well worth a thought!

@indexer After 85 I am ready to take any risk. Right now I have too many responsibilities and I can not knowingly risk my life.

It is fun to travel. But I think it is more fun to travel first the whole earth before traveling to another planet haha. Here on the earth, it is dangerous what more if we're outside.

By the time I could ever afford to go.. they are gonna have malls and other things readily available for entertainment! The plans they have to get a group of scientists over there to start on colonizing that planet is kinda pretty interesting! I wonder if amazon would be still in business of shipping stuff and if it would deliver to the red planet. Its actually not that costly to send ahead supplies compared to a vessel doing a return trip!
