I took this picture yesterday during a walk along part of the Grand Union Canal in Warwickshire.
It is hard to believe from this peaceful scene that this was once England's main artery for the transfer of goods from the industrial West Midlands to London. Had I stood here 200 years ago the canal would have been full of barges instead of the two narrowboats you can see here - we only saw one other boat on the water during an hour-long walk.

Slightly different! The Three Men were rowing a boat up the River Thames as opposed to taking a narrowboat along a canal.
As it happens, the boat you can see on the right - as we found out from chatting to the crew as they went through the lock - belongs to the Royal Navy and the guys on board - 6 of them - were on leave and enjoying a fresh-water as opposed to sea voyage!
