It’s time for another one of my favorite songs by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Steve Miller! Friday he turned 75, so why not celebrate? I realized in looking at the list last night that yesterday’s entry, “Jungle Love,” is the only “big hit” on my list. John Roberts just probably exhaled, knowing now that he won’t have to suffer with “The Joker” (which was on his list of songs that make him cringe). Here’s the next song on the list.
#8: Give It Up
Abracadabra was the last Steve Miller album I bought. There were a lot of reasons for that. My tastes changed between albums (he took four years between Book of Dreams and Circle of Love), I thought Circle of Love sucked (it only had five songs on it, one of which was all of side two...sheesh, Steve didn’t even do that back in the psychadelic era!), and Abracadabra was the nail in the coffin....especially that horrid title song (“Abra, abracadabra, I wanna reach out and slap ya”).
Amid a pretty lame album there was a gem: “Give It Up.” This song was released as a single after “Abracadabra,” but people were still too busy overplaying that song to worry about this. Bummer. With its 50s feel it was a great summer song. Lyrically there’s nothing to the song, but it does have a magic to it. Much more so than that idiotic song that gave the album its title.....

I need to preface this comment by saying that, from 1976-82 I had every Steve Miller album, and I saw him live twice.
Having said that....there are a lot of Steve Miller songs you can say that about.

To this day he probably walks in the bank and says, “Here’s another sucker check for ‘Abracadabra’!”
