My diary entry for Thursday 18th October 2018 is centred on reviewing the fourth of the eight movies I'm watching as part of the Preston International Movie Festival. It is the most recent movie to be screened this year, an Italian tragi-comedy drama called (in Italian) chi-salvera-le-rose from 2017. Spoiler alerts. Delle Piane plays a retired ageing professional poker player, Giulio Santelia who is looking after his dying lover, Claudio (Lando Buzzanca). Claudio has an undiscxlosed 'strange disease' implying that he may be dying of AIDS. Giullio treats his friend to a fresh rose from the expensive large house's extensive gardens each day, and feels saddened when he has to take away any wilted rose. The problem is that in not playing poker any more, Giullio's money is running out and he has had to sell off most of the household furniture, but uses his poker face to maintain a lie that all is well until things get critical enough for him to have to bring in his daughter and grandson to help out. Giullio's daughter is distressed that in loving Claudio so much, Giullio has neglected her needs. Giullio manipulates his grandson into playing in a high stakes poker game as his protege, to gain enough money to save the estate. Delightful acting, and tender poetic dialogue, this film separates love that transcends generations.
