Felt Awkward in a Gathering

One of our neighbors invited us for their 25th wedding anniversary, saying it would be just a "late breakfast."
My husband and I thought it was an informal gathering of neighbors over a cup of coffee.
We were wrong, when we arrived at the venue, just near the village gate, we saw the couple wearing formal wear, gown and barong (formal Filipino long sleeves), and some guests too, but some wore informal clothes like us.
We also thought it was exclusive for the homeowners only, but some local public officials were there too.
I felt awkward because I was wearing a t-shirt with collar, and I thought I should had worn even an informal blouse. Anyway, the couple were just too happy to see us attend the occasion.
Do you mind if you were not dressed for the occasion; do also feel awkward?

I think we call that OP or out of place. I'm like Mark Zuckerberg and I'm used to it
I wear bull cap even when I'm with dignitaries and wear t-shirt though most are in formal. I'm also in ponytail.

I go for it too, to be comfortable instead of being too fashionable.

As long as it doesn't require formal or semi formal attire, I still go with my prefer clothes.

@acelawrites It seems that others weren’t aware either. I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

Well, I thought it was an informal affair like just a coffeetalk with neighbors. They did not send a formal invitation; just in the chat group.

Maybe the couple just want all the neighbors to be present , so they didn't say what attire should be worn. Usually, others are deterred from attending because of the dress code.

Oh, well at least you were able to attend. Did they tell you what attire you should wear? if not then it's not your fault.

They did not tell; they said it's only a late breakfast. They invited us through a chatroom for homeowners.

I don't mind if I am not aware of the kind of party it is. It has never happened with me. I don't think you were at fault though you might have felt awkward.

We thought it was just an informal breakfast at a restaurant near our subdivision.

@acelawrites But luckily there were few others who came in informal wear. So even they were not aware.
