The Misinformation of Social Media

It's so sad that in this the social climate of today people mostly rely on the opinions of others on social media instead of what's actually being reported on the "News". The internet and other news forms should not be the only form of reference when it comes to receiving information about what's going on in the world. Unfortunately, this is what a lot of people rely on to get their news information. I could go on and on and about who's mainly to blame for this problem but it's unnecessary. Watching the news this morning about the bomber attack on political advocates against a certain person in office at the White House just makes me shake my head in shame for the direction of where our country the USA has gone. I will always refuse to say his name because it's just sad. I don't agree with how our "leader" has reacted to our troubling times but I sort of have to agree with him on certain issues about "fake news". The "Resident" in charge continues to state that mainstream media attacks the Republicans. Some of this is true. The problem isn't with his statement, but it's with his reaction. Former leaders in the past have been attacked negatively on their political views and how they are handling things while in government office. The difference is that they didn't whine and complain when reports are done that may seem to show them in a negative light. Tweeting back or "clapping back" on social media is not the way a true leader should handle things when things are going wrong. We are at a time when we can't truly rely on the "news" for information on what's going on in the world. There was a time when the news stations would just report the news and not give their opinions on the news. I miss those times. My feeling is due to social media and the entertainment world needing ratings for people to watch regular television that this is what news reporters are doing now. Unfortunately, I don't see a way to resolve this issue. We can only hope and pray that more people would open their eyes and not continue to rely on the misinformation of social media.

Was just looking at mark zuckerberg's reaction to how social media is being used on PBS the other day!!! Some feel he should edit some posts!! But how can we stop the mammoth that has become facebook from making fake post!!! Maybe it can be made to go back to what is was intended for- connecting with friends!!!!

@db20747 I"m not sure how or if we can go back to facebook's original intention. Things have evolved and grown into something else with social media and technology. Everything is about trying to make money online. I have to admit myself that it wasn't until I could possibly make money from it did I choose to become active online. I am not from the generation of wanting to communicate everything on social media. I'm a very private person. I'm very careful with how I express myself online.

I don't do much with social media these days and never have. I mostly have accounts for days in the future when I want to do serious writing and share about that. I barely see all the junk flying about these days.

@TishaMears I might look at Twitter once or twice a year and don't stay long. I do catch Facebook a bit more but mainly if I happen to catch a current notif when I'm on my phone. I might check a few things out but I leave shortly after as my times been limited. I have a lot of deleting to do on Pinterest as I posted all my bubblews posts on there along with those of friends. Until I delete the old I see no reason to add new ones yet. If I get spare time and I may have more in the next few months, I would want to come up with articles for hubpages to improve the passive income I get from them.

@MarshaMusselman I have a love/hate relationship with social media. I try to ignore it at times, then I would go back to looking at it when I get bored or something. It depends on my mood and my need to be online sometimes.

I agree with you entirely. A president with any dignity would not "tweet back" against criticisms in the media. But the media has become less "objective" than it was in the days of Walter Cronkite. I miss those days.

@TheHorse Absolutely! I definitely miss the days of Walter Cronkite news. I once thought that I wanted to be a journalist when I went to college. I'm sorta glad that I didn't go into the field then with the direction the media has gone now.

I really do miss the show on PBS that used to air regularly every Sunday, for 30 minutes, called The McLaughlin Group, with mediator and host, John McLaughlin and two people from the left and two others from the right, debating issues of the day. It was a great show. I loved it.

@TishaMears Right. As you have implied/said, they grab "memes" from social media and run with them, without bothering to do their own research.

@lookatdesktop Hmmm... Alot of people don't watch shows like that anymore so that's probably why it's gone.
