Sicilian Caponata

Sicilian Caponata I love travelling, and the main thing I enjoy about it is soaking up the local colour and culture. Nothing embodies local culture more than its cuisine, and few things give me more pleasure than sampling it, whether in a fancy restaurant or a basic greasy-spoon where market stallholders eat. Follow the locals, is my motto! The island of Sicily saw a major cultural fusion between Norman and Arab in the early Middle Ages, and its remnants are still evident in the cuisine of the island, as well as in the dialect of Italian spoken there. In fact 'Mafia' is a Sicilian word derived from the Arabic for aggressive boasting. Sicilian caponata is one of the best dishes I've enjoyed in Italy. That's aubergine (eggplant), courgette (zucchini), celery, capers and olives, slow-cooked in a rich tomato sauce with sultanas, fruity olive oil, and balsamic vinegar [edit: not balsamic, but white wine vinegar - thanks Anna]. Topped with roasted almonds and mint leaves, and served on a bed of couscous. Yeah I think it's pretty clear what is my favourite aspect of travelling! What's yours?

Unfortunately, I was in Sicily only for some days and didn't have this dish. I remember excellent fish dishes, however. Not to forget the Sicilian sweets.

@MALUSE I know it is a shame to cut it, but it's too good to resist.

You sound like Anthony Bourdain, he used to talk like that. What a loss. I know you watched him, right? This food you have shared, oh my it looks divine.

I watched Bourdain once, I think, exploring Lisbon's street food. Must look him up again! Carol, that food was divine

It looks so good! I'm not much of a traveller but food would be an important aspect of travelling. I live in a huge cosmopolitan city where there are people from everywhere and it's interesting to taste the large variety of good food.

That's a nice advantage to living in a multicultural environment! When I spent a week in New York 20 years ago, I ate a different cuisine every evening, everything from Tibetan to Ethiopian, via Korean and Senegalese!

Oh you lucky thing! I do love people-watching too. Luckily, it's easy to combine that with eating in Sicily's warm climate
