There is something new I learned this morning. It is about the hypnic jerk. Have you heard about this before? Even if you din't you may have experienced it at least once in your lifetime. Curious? Read on.
When people are falling asleep or almost sleep they experience a feeling as if they are startled or falling down.
It causes people to experience rapid heart beat, shock, sweating etc.
It is apparently caused by irregular sleep patterns, anxiety, having caffeinated drinks or alcohol a few hours before sleep time, stress and strenuous activities closer to sleep time.
Sometimes it could be just a random experience.
It occurs during the non REM sleep or deep sleep state.
It is said to be more frequent and common among children in the age group of 8-12.
Hypnic jerks are less common among older people in the age group of 60-85.
Researchers say that there is nothing to worry, it is a normal action of the body.
However if you want to avoid it altogether reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeinated drinks and relax more in the evenings. Avoid going to the gym or strenuous activity after dinner.
Have you heard of the hypnic jerk before? If yes, do you have more information to share.
Did you learn something new today (maybe other than this) that you would like to share?

I've learned a few new things in the past week but can't remember presently anything in particular today
I've had that before and I think more as an adult than as a child. For me, it's been when I've dreamed of falling in some way. It could be so simple as running in a field and hitting a small hole.
I heard it explained years back that our bodies can't tell what were falling into and if it didn't wake is up we could die at the impact.

@sofssu I never heard a name for it before this. In fact I learned what I shared before the internet and info became so popular.

I've only heard of the name from you but I've experienced this many times when I was still in high school and the feeling was frightening when you woke up from the sense of falling :)

I experienced one last night. I hate it as it often startles me awake and it takes me a few minutes to calm down and go back to sleep.

@sofssu I am somewhat of a light sleeper. If someone is talking outside my door, even if it isn't to me, I will wake up and be unable to fall back asleep.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, it does disturb your sleep. Especially so for light sleepers. I am one of those.

Yes I experienced, we Ilocano sometimes refer it as "batibat"-- near to nightmare or bangungot.

Yes it has happened to me and pretty much everyone I know. It jerks you awake and I always heard it is because you are dreaming that you are falling and it wakes you up with a jerk before you hit the ground.

@hillhjill dreams happen in the REM state.. But I guess scientifically may not be true.. not so sure though.
