With the threat of that dirty "S" word in our weather forecast I don't think anyone would be planning a trip to Louisville this week. But there's always spring and summer! Here's another one of those popular tourist attractions in town that I haven't been to (yet).
#5: Whiskey Row
When you think of Kentucky, things that usually come to mind are horses, bluegrass (music and the actual grass), and bourbon. Kentucky is the only place where bourbon is made. Bourbon isn't whiskey. Why it's called Whiskey Row, I don't know (given that bourbon isn't whiskey), but it's been that since the 19th century.
The area fell into disrepair for eons. Then the various distilleries in the state decided to get together for a "Bourbon Trail," showcasing the various brands in the region (such as Jim Beam, Four Roses, Maker's Mark, and Old Forester). As part of the "bourbon tourism" the area of Main Street that was Whiskey Row was revitalized. Even a fire in 2015 didn't stop the projects.
Now Whiskey Row is home to some of the bourbon distilleries such as Evan Williams as well as the historical sites that aren't there any longer. A plethora of restaurants with bourbon bars are also along Whiskey Row.
If you have an interest in the history of bourbon, including things that happened in Prohibition, a walk along Whiskey Row is a must. I don't drink (but I have been to the Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto), but even I would find the history interesting.
Here's a video about Whiskey Row:
In this episode we visit the Old Forest Distillery on Whiskey Row in Downtown Louisville. Dining at Merle's Whiskey Kitchen.
