Works Leaving Do

I am currently on secondment from my work place to another so I haven't been to my home establishment for 7 months. However I went to a leaving do for one of the people who work at my home establishment yesterday as I get on with him and wanted to show my face. My partner also works with him and really likes him so wanted to go despite normally being really anti social.
We only went for 2 hours as my neighbour was watching my little boy and I don't like to leave her too long, it's really kind of her to watch him so I don't want to take advantage.
It was a good night but I hardly knew anyone as I haven't been there for so long. I was a little uncomfortable at times, especially when my partner was off talking to people I didn't know.

How do you handle social events like this ? Do you like big gatherings?

I totally agree, I find big gatherings overwhelming, you don't get a chance to talk to anyone properly. I much prefer small groups of friends going for a meal or a few drinks x
