Have you ever been unable to take "dangerous items" on board a plane?

It is no surprise that airport security staff are always on the lookout for items that passengers want to take on board but which might be considered potentially dangerous, but sometimes one has to wonder whether they have gone too far.
Just recently, a professional concert cellist was prevented from taking a spare set of strings with him in his hand luggage, when about to fly from Warsaw Airport after giving a concert. There was no problem with the actual cello - fully strung - but the spare strings were another matter!
Did the security staff really think that the cellist was going to garotte his fellow passengers with them? As the cellist said, it was a wonder that they didn't think he was going to stab someone with the cello's floor spike!
Have you ever come across the rules being interpreted this strictly with something you wanted to take on board?

@indexer No they were not insured at all in any fashion. It was expensive scissors, razor, thinner, hair dryers and so on. I was raging that they were stolen but I had no choice but to leave them as I was in a tremendous hurry and they certainly were not going to let me take something that could be a weapon on the plane. Sods with their rules and regulations lol

And a strong person could easily strangle someone with their bare hands! Where do you draw the line in such matters?
