Practice makes perfect, they say, but slaving away at the same thing for hour after hour will teach you very little if it has all become a boring task that you no longer want to do. You will learn fastest if you enjoy the process of learning. One good tip is to combine learning with relaxation. If you enjoy watching comedy or drama on TV, try doing so on a set that has subtitles. These are usually there for the benefit of deaf people, but you will soon find that you can absorb far more of the language if you are able to read it and hear it at the same time. You could also do this with films that are spoken in your own language but have English subtitles. You will enjoy the film and find yourself picking up English phrases almost by accident. If you are a student in an English-speaking country, don’t socialize just with people of your own nationality. Make friends with some “natives” and invite them along to your parties and other events. You will have to speak English, as it is unlikely that your new friends will understand your language, and you will get out of the habit of speaking your own language with your fellow ex-patriots. This is an excellent way of having fun and improving your English at the same time. You will improve your English if you stick at it and really want to succeed. Try reading and writing lots of posts on Mylot for a start, as these vary tremendously in the quality of English that they are written in. Can you spot the differences between the good ones and the bad ones? If a phrase or sentence puzzles you, why not post a response to ask the writer to explain it ? Generally speaking, we’re a friendly bunch here!
