Day 95 Luke 22:63-71 Luke 22:63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65 And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him. 66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67 Art thou the Christ? Tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? For we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. Countries at war take prisoners and torture them, doing their best to make the prisoners talk, giving them information, they can use against their enemy. Jesus wasn’t their enemy, yet they treated him as though he was. They tortured him, mocked him, and questioned him until he gave them an answer that sealed his destiny. They asked him if he was the Son of God. What the chief priests didn’t understand was that they fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy concerning their Messiah. Isaiah 53:1 Who hath believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely, he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opens not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Everything they did to Jesus in his trial, Isaiah told them would take place. As Christians, you know the reason the Jews hated Jesus, wasn’t only because he taught the people what God’s Law said, but he gave the people hope that God was good, kind, gracious, and forgiving. Jesus told the people God loved them. When soldiers mocked Jesus, they fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy. When they determined Jesus’ death, they fulfilled God’s intention for his Son, the salvation of all mankind. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. God’s love for the world brought Jesus to the chief priests who handed him over for death. Jesus’ death brought life to everyone who believes in him. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to be my Savior, for sending him to the cross because you love me. Help me stand against those who come against you in the same way Jesus did, silently. Let my actions show your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
