Guys, recently my students have learned the new words about clothes.
Such as: jacket, pants, shorts, shoes, socks, T-shirt, shirt, sweater and etc.
However, there is a question that need to be explained in details.
Why shoes, socks and shorts, pants and trousers have their plural forms at first, but jacket, T-shirt, shirt, sweater don't?
WHY?
When I was a student, my English teacher told me nothing about it, just said it was.

I would think because you're dealing with two. Two legs, two feet. You only have one torso. I've never given it a thought before, but it's the best reason I can think of.

what I know is if you use pant or a trouser, then your half butt will show.

shoes and socks because theres two of them or else youd be asking for one sock or one shoe.
shorts, pants and trousers because they cover two legs. you dont call it a skirts, or dresses because it just goes over with one opening over your legs. not two openings like pants. well, thats what my brain tells me, my brain has been known to make stuff up , so youre on your own
