Day 4
John 2:1-11
John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus said unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother said unto the servants, Whatsoever he says unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six water pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus said unto them, Fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he said unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And said unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
What do you serve guests, the best or less quality? Do you spare no expense when it comes to a party or is standard good enough? I expect we all try to serve our guests the best we can afford.
Jesus was at a marriage feast in Cana and the wine had run out. Mary approached him about the wine, and told the servants to do whatever he told them.
As Christians, you know the servants were the only ones who knew the new wine came from ordinary water.
Everything Jesus did had a purpose. The marriage feast, though a real event, was also symbolic of the Christian life.
In the Christian life, Jesus is the bridegroom. One day he will give a marriage supper for all those who accepted him as Savior and Lord.
Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
8 And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Whenever Jesus spoke about servants, he referred to Christians, those who witnessed what Jesus did for them. Servants obey their masters when instructed in any task. Christians are called to be obedient to Christ, even when the task seems impossible.
The water pots were empty, ready for someone to fill them so they could be used. All who hear the Word of God is an empty water pot ready for someone to fill them with the Word so they can be poured out to other water pots.
The water was ordinary water, yet when touched by Jesus, became extraordinary and new. Jesus takes the ordinary state of our lives, and makes us new. We are no longer ordinary water, but we have the life of Jesus flowing in us. That new life is the new wine of the Holy Spirit living and active in us so we can pour out the new wine to everyone who will listen.
The governor of the feast didn’t know where the new wine came from. However, he recognized it was better than the original wine served at the beginning of the feast.
When you’re ready to accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. When your water pot is empty and everything you’ve done in has come to nothing. The only thing you can do is reach out to Jesus and let him fill your water pot with the new wine of salvation only he can give.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV)
Are you an empty water pot waiting for Jesus to fill you? Are you ready to be poured out with the new wine of the Holy Spirit so others will benefit from the new wine and become new vessels for his glory?
Let’s pray: Father, I am an empty water pot ready for you to pour into me the new wine of your Holy Spirit. Fill me to overflowing so I can fill other water pots with the message of your love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
