In sports why are coaches given so much importance?

I'm not exactly a sports fan. I watch a bit of Cricket and Tennis matches. Soccer has never been my cup of tea. But one thing I fail to understand is this sports why are coaches given so much importance, when finally the players are the ones who have to go out there and perform?

Coaches can mound raw talent into fine products. They can find flaws in the sports persons and can guide them to a higher trajectory.
