Haha! Many Coloradans are in a foul mood this morning after their beloved Denver Broncos got their asses handed to them by my beloved Oakland Raiders last night, but the game did wonders for my morale! On with my countdown of my favorite bands with Colorado ties! We are at #4: Stuart Davis.
OK, so he's not a band, but Stuart Davis is one of those "best band you've never heard of" guys. Influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, and XTC, Stuart Davis was born in Iowa, grew up in Minnesota, where, until his father gave him a guitar, he dreamed of being a hockey player, and spent much of his early career living in Boulder, Colorado (he now lives in Amsterdam with his wife and two daughters.)
As a musician, Davis regularly tours the United States and Europe, and has released 13 studio albums, two live albums, and a compilation. He was also the writer/director/host of a comedy sketch show on HDNet (now AXS TV) called "Sex, God, Rock 'n Roll" (he is a very funny guy. He could totally pull that off.)
As funny as he is (other than perhaps #2 on this countdown, I've seen Stuart Davis more than any other musical act. His live performances are chock full of improvised jokes, stories, and comments. Dude could easily have been a standup comedian,) Davis is quite the deep thinker. He has developed his own language, "Is," and is a contributing member of philosopher/writer Ken Wilber's Integral Institute (Integral Theory attempts to place a diverse group of theories and thinkers into one single framework as a "theory of everything.")
Anyway, before I break my ankle tripping all over myself gushing about the guy, I've had the opportunity to speak to Stuart Davis several times over the years. Very nice, very down to earth fellow. And he's a great songwriter to boot!

This is an introduction to Davis for most of us.

He's not very well known, but he does have a good sized cult following.

He's a really nice guy. Very intelligent. You can see it just by talking to him.

Quite interesting music. It wanders through a lot of different styles in four minutes!

He's pretty good at that. "Doppelganger Body Donor" is like a total Klezmer song.
