I'm watching Lore again, there's a second season out. I've not watched the episodes in order, the episode I'm about to talk about is the first episode of the second season.
Burke and Hare were Irish men who settled in Edinburgh during the time that corpse trade was legal. They ended up killing 16 people in total.
Hare would eventually turn king's evidence (confess and tell all in exchange for immunity) against Burke.
I'm going to leave the Wikipedia article which explains a lot more. I absolutely love these lore episodes.
