Harvard was the first American university. It was chartered by the Massachusetts General courts in October 1636. In November of the next year or was decided by the courts that it was to be built in the city of New Towne and named Cambridge University. It was named after the university in England In 1639 the university renamed Harvard after the university 's John Harvard, who was a British philanthropist and clergyman that had left the university library 400 books and 800 pounds of sterling silver the year before when he died.

It was nice to be named after someone who is very generous and a scholar himself, I guess.
