Does drinking alkaline water really help one to ward off diseases?

Proponents of drinking alkaline water claim that it can help slow the aging process, improve immunity of our body and also prevent chronic diseases like cancer. But does it really help? It may be preposterous to claim that it can prevent cancer. At the most it may be beneficial in regulating acidity in our GI tract, thereby helping to prevent acidity. However, there is no scientific evidence that fully verifies the claims made by supporters of alkaline water. What are your views?
