Do you think Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is safe? Do you use it in your food preparations?

There is lot of controversy surrounding monosodium glutamate (MSG) also known as "ajinomoto" or "Chinese salt", which is used as flavour enhancer in many Chinese dishes including soups, stews and noodles. It is also used in canned food and processed meat. Even though it is considered as safe in small amounts, it is banned in child food in almost 50 countries including Australia, U.K. and most of European nations. Do you consider it safe? Do you use it in your food preparations?

I try to avoid MSG and never use it myself when cooking. It is not permitted in children's food in many countries but you are quite incorrect in saying that it is banned 'in 50 countries'. The only country which currently bans its use is Pakistan.

@myklj999 I found one site (a Turkish site about halal foods) with 'somewhat similar' information (i.e. it said that MSG was "banned in childs food in 50 countries including the EU" but didn't specify the countries). A search on 'MSG banned' will show a number of sites which advocate banning it but it is only actually banned completely in Pakistan and I can't find any list of countries which ban it in 'childs food' (presumably meaning 'baby food').

@owlwings Yes, you are right - my apologies! It is banned only in child food in 50 countries. India was considering banning it too. But haven't been able to do it so far.

Don't know about the man made one, but the natural MSG present in tomatoes I heard. (I eat lots of tomatoes, especially in dishes like spaghetti bolognese)

@YrNemo Tomatoes are good for our health - good source of Lycopene and other healthy nutrients.

Since it was being reported that this is poisonous many years ago. Thus, we don't use them anymore.
