Shamelessly stealing this idea from John Roberts (who counted down his 15 favorite songs with “time” in the title), I’m looking at my ten favorite songs in rock with “time” in the title, as well as my ten favorite country “time” songs. I’ve already posted the country song, so here’s the rock side of things.
#9: One Time, One Night - Los Lobos
Gee, isn’t this a cheery song? (That’s what my mom said when I played it for her one day.)
No. It shows the bad side of “the home of the brave in the land here of the free”: car wrecks that kill children, shootings, child abductions, abusive relationships, and all that.
Of course, it goes on everywhere, but I think the point of the song is all of these televangelists in the 80s were painting America is the one moral lighthouse of the world...while all of this was going on.
It’s got a brutal message, but dang, what a terrific song.

I hung out there when I was younger and thankfully most of the neighborhoods around here have changed for the better.
