What role do the carbs play in making us fat? Low carb diet or low fat diet - which is the best option to lose weight?

If you are trying to lose weight, which is the best option - low fat diet or low carb diet? This has been a topic of fierce debate among those seeking to lose weight. Since people are so different that it's extremely difficult to conduct studies that show what really works over long period of time.
Those advocating low carb diet claim that by cutting carbs, our body will instead burn fat for fuel while feeling less hungry, thus helping in weight loss.
While proponents of low fat diet claim, that cutting down on fat is a better idea since, since a gram of fat has twice as many calories than the same amount of protein and carbs.
What are your views?
Two major studies last year provided more fuel for a particularly polarizing topic -the role carbs play in making us fat.

@Nevena83 Yes eating in moderation is the key, and also exercise.

@Icydoll Yes we have to limit consumption of simple carbohydrates and replace it with comples carbs.
