Thomas Paine published his common sense pamphlet which called for a war of independence (American Revolution) . This was published in 1776 and sold over 500,000 copies. Thomas' rudimentary education taught him to read and write, but writing wouldn't be his first vocation. He worked alongside his father in corset making then went on to be an excise officer, collecting taxes on liquor on tobacco.
He wouldn't travel to America until Benjamin Franklin suggested that is where he'd find his fortunes.
Thomas Paine: Thomas Paine, political propagandist whose Common Sense pamphlet and Crisis papers influenced the American Revolution.

Yes, it certainly defies common sense today. Of course, it was very much a point of fashion and respectability back then.1 person likes this

@josie_ This is true..
You also remind me of a video I happened upon. I was watching videos on youtube of how women dressed themselves in historical times. This video popped up of this old woman and her husband. They were being interviewed, she still wears corsets. However, her body was badly deformed around the waist. I mean her waist was too skinny and it made me wonder just how many health problems she had because of it. Her husband still found her attractive though and that's why she used the corsets.

Too bad there is little common sense these days.
