How to CHOOSE what is RIGHT??

I have grown up hearing that we should help others as mush as we can, but what if in the process of helping some one we do wrong to others?
Yesterday, a random stray cat killed a pigeon. I feed pigeons on my roof top and felt really bad about it. One of my neighbors saw the incident but didn't try to shoo away the cat.
I got to know about it in the evening and when I asked her, she replied, 'that is the cat's food and that is what they are meant to do.' In that situation, I would have shooed the cat but maybe that way I would have kept it hungry.. I mean I don't have extra milk in my house all the time and she was not also from our neighborhood.
So, here is my question...
In a jungle if you see an animal trying to kill another animal, what would you do?? Would you save the prey or will you let the predator do it's job? In one way, you would be saving a life but snatching the food of a living being and in the other scenario, you would be letting an animal enjoy it's meal at the cost of some one's life..

@Sheali Well... To be honest, I'm 50% heart and 50% mind, but it's depends on the situation.

@WiseGhots Ok.. as in how hungry the predator is or how cute the prey is.. :)
Ok.. I am just trying to make the discussion easy going but I know it is difficult..

This has something to do with Karma again.
If you save the pigeon, the pigeon will be grateful to you and you have a positive karma with it but you denied the cat from eating its meat, hence you would accumulate negative karma with the cat. Vice Versa if you do the reversal.

Exactly... But how do you know which karma will accumulate more points.. :) :)
Anyways.. Do you help others only for the sake of Karma or because it gives you mental satisfaction.. If one day you know that, there is nothing called Karma, what would you do? Stop helping??

@Sheali If I see anything bad that is about to happen, I would try my hardest to prevent it from happening. Sadly, it's how animals live in the wild. Majority of animals need meat to live and they eat other living creatures to do this.
If I was witnessing small animals trying to eat each other then I would try to stop it. But if it was something like a lion then I'm afraid I'm not going to do anything because then there's a chance I would die too.
