Today is the day when we get to eat special sweets, which are prepared at home specifically for this festival.. My mom is busy in the kitchen while I am busy MY Lotting..
I will also make something in the evening.. We share these yummy sweets/desserts what ever you may call them with neighbors and relatives.. While I was typing this post, one of my relatives called me and right now I am eating what I just got, and typing..
It is called by different names in different parts of India..
Shankranti - In eastern and Western India
Pongal - In parts of South India
Lohri - North India (celebrated 1 day before Sankranti)
Tushu Porob - (not widely known) People belonging to a small tribal community in east India..
Some communities perform special religious rituals, while others just enjoy the tasty sweets..
Ok.. Now I will concentrate on my eating

@ramapo17 Yes, We made something called Dudh peethe.. (dudh means milk, and peethe is a roll stuffed with coconut and milk products... We first fry the roll and then dip it in concentrated flavored milk.. It tastes yummy..
Our neighbors made duch puli, which is similar to peether, just that it is not in the form of a roll..
Some people make kheer or payesh or payasum same recipe having different names..
and many more actually depending on the community.. :)

We have a large Indian population here in BC, Canada. When I have heard people speak of it they call it Lohri, so I guess our Indian population must be primarily from Northern India! How cool.

@Sheali Ah yes, now that you have mentioned it, the majority of our Indian population is from the Punjab area!

@Sheali I have heard about this event before and I think it sounds really cool! And a nice way to interact with neighbours.
