Murderous Tuesday: The Boy In The Box

In 1957 a boy's body was found inside a box in a Philadelphia neighborhood. The boy was severely beaten and malnourished. His age was estimated to be between 4 and 6 years of age.
Police tried to trace the killer by locating where the box had come from. It was A JC Penney's box and while most customers came forward, four did not and there was no way to trace them otherwise.
The boy's body had been found by a college student but apparently that wasn't the first time it had been found. A man came across it but did not report it and could not recall which day he had seen it. A motorist drove by a pecular scene, a mother and daughter on the roadside appeared to be broke down. The good samaritan tried to offer help but the woman shooed the man away.
Years later a story would come out that would clarify the situation. A severely mentally ill woman claims that her mother was the one to have killed the boy, that he was a foster child and had been abused and beaten by her parents. That the boy's death was an accident but that the mother forced her daughter to help her dispose of the body. She claims to be the child on the roadside standing by the mother. She says after the man left they stashed the boy in a box and left him there.
Now there are other theories and some DNA testing is yet to be done. However, I do think that this woman's story is the most accurate. Why? because if I had witnessed my parents abuse (and perhaps been victim of it myself), I can't say as I would have come out unscathed. The woman may have experienced trauma as a result of her upbringing in a home like that.
Here's more on it for the curious :

Yes it is. He would have grown to be a handsome boy if he hadn't been shown the evil and wicked that live in this world. I think he must have been an orphan, I don't want to believe that someone that was kin to him could do such things!

@Courage7 Yes, I do hope so. You know, some souls stay on this earth to forever live out their tragedies. I hope he was not one of them. I think his soul would have been pure enough to be able to be at peace.

That is a very famous case. I have seen it featured on TV. The terrible things some people are capable of is mind boggling.

I'm glad you responded. Spectrum (my cable provider) does have the ID channel on demand. I was scrolling through some of the programs they offer. At the moment I am watching 24 Hours to Hell and Back, but I'll see what th ID channel has perhaps this weekend.
Yes, it's rather disturbing what people are capable of.

@snowy22315 Oh that's horrible. I wonder if he would have woken up after passing out if he was drowning. No, I don't want to think about that. After I get through all of my notifications, I am going to do the dishes and then check out an episode of that missing.

@arthurchappell I agree with that. I think there is a case of a boy missing since the 1860s that hasn't been solved

I do too, but I wonder if there's anybody left to mourn the boy. I mean, I think he was orphaned all those years ago.

If anyone is still alive they are probably very old and feeble. I don't know that they would be prosecuted. However, I think that the poor boy was an orphan and that there is also no living relative to mourn him.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That is so sad. I agree if they are still alive they are very old unless they were young during the time. Still maybe 70's or early 80's. I wish there were family to morn the poor boy.

@noni1959 Yes, and to think that the boy would be in his 50's or early 60's if this had not have happened to him.

Yes, I like to read about unsolved cases and try to figure them out for myself. A lot of unsolved cases are just because the department didn't have the resources or means to really investigate. I especially like the ones from ages ago when forensics just weren't really there.

Yes. Things were a lot different back then. I don't think his parents were alive though, I don't think his actual parents did this to him.

@Sheali The article I provided is a few years old. I am going to see if I can find any updated information. They may have figured out who killed him after all these years.

I did a little more research but I need to do much more. I am not sure if they've ever found out who did it. I just hope the boy's soul is at peace.

The majority of cold cases are, in my opinion. This one is just sad.
