I was ONLY in my 30's and suddenly...

I was 36 to be exact and suddenly, my entire life changed! I had Uterine Cancer. I had always kept up with my appointments and we had been doctoring trying to have a child. One night out of nowhere, complications send my flying to our tiny local hospital as a volunteer EMT did all they could to keep me alive. She did and the little hospital was waiting for me. The ER Dr flung the doors open and was in the ambulance with me before I knew we were there.
All of these things..the EMT, the doctor, and the all night care I received to get me stable are what kept me alive. It was a few days later I found out about the cancer. I was sent to a specialist, had surgery, radiation, and was declared NED (No Evidence of Disease) all within 6 months and then the 5 year wait came with many appointments. Well, I made it through that too...
There will be no child, but that's okay! I'm healthy and only a few weeks ago, I had an amazing opportunity! The ER doctor that treated me got an awesome promotion and was in our news. I sent an email where he'd gotten the job asking them to pass it along! Reminding him that I am ONE, but he saved me with his fast actions and compassion. Reminding him that small hospitals need good doctors because for us living here, that's what we have...
His response was overwhelming and appreciative. As an ER doctor, you never really know after that one visit where serious medical patients end up. They go off to their family doctors and specialists, so to hear that he had made such a difference was really something...and yes, he remembered that night because he was afraid too! He couldn't stabilize me to get me out to a larger hospital, so it was on him and the ER staff that night to do all they could....They did...
Always keep your doctor appointments...and always, always remember to say thank you if the opportunity presents itself. I can tell you that his return email is one I will save forever!! It will remind me that 'thank you' can some days mean everything!

What a blessing! I'm always thankful, especially in this day of disinterested doctors, for the physicians who take the time to listen and act instead of "take this and come back if you don't feel better." I had a doctor, a nephrologist, who refused to dismiss my pain as "too high for female trouble" by telling me, "Anything from your neck to your knees can be 'female trouble.'" Turned out, he was right: there was a fist-sized tumor on my ovary. Other doctors kept dismissing it as "kidney stones."
Thank God for our doctors!!!

Me too!! I was so glad to have an opportunity to reach out to him with my good news!! I believe I owe it to him! I'd never have made it to the specialists, etc...if he hadn't helped me through the night!

It is always great to say thanks but often life gets in the way with things like yours. Glad you still got the chance to tell him.
