Grief Before the Death of a Loved One

It's taken me awhile to be ready to write about this, but it's something I want to share... My sweet, brave mother-in-law died on November 30, 2018, at the age of 94. She had been ill for a long time. The last five years were especially difficult for her. It's been very hard for us too. I was her full-time carer for three years before she went to live in a nursing home in 2015. We all spent a lot of time in hospitals and nursing homes the past few years. Several times, we were convinced that she would not live until the next day. We'd start thinking about funeral arrangements. Then she would somehow get better again! The emotional roller coaster took a toll on me, especially this last year. I finally found some good information which describes what my husband and I (and our kids) went through. Please see the link below. It's more difficult for me to think about the years of Mom's suffering than it is to accept her death. Her passing was a relief in many ways. In fact, she had been telling us for months that she was weary of the battle and wanted it to be over. So she is finally free! We realize that we've been very fortunate to have her with us for so many years.

It is hard to watch out loved ones suffer when you know that their time in drawing near. When they do go even though you are going to miss them terribly there is that sense of relief. As much as it hurts you know they are finally free of pain and it was their time to go. So sorry for your loss.

Looking after a much-loved elderly relative knowing that they only have a limited time left is one of the most difficult things we can experience. You have my sympathy on your loss
