Damn, am I all over the place today or what? I am counting down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title. This is the "State" portion of today's discussion, and we are at #7: "State of Grace" by Saxon. Unless you are a metalhead, you might not be familiar with New Wave of British Heavy Metal leaders Saxon. Fronted by charismatic vocalist Biff Byford, the influential Saxon formed in Barnsley in 1977, and have sold over 23 million albums worldwide. "State of Grace" is the leadoff track from their 2007 album, The Inner Sanctum, which saw the return of longtime drummer Nigel Glockler after a ten year absence (neck injuries.) If you don't know Saxon, these guys are a pretty damn powerful band, although they aren't all about non-stop headbanging. "State of Grace" follows the same formula found in some of their more known tunes such as "Crusader" and "The Power and the Glory." Bloody awesome, this thing is! I got to see Saxon back in the 80's, in a small Colorado Springs rock club, for eight bucks. Eight dollars to see a legendary heavy metal band! The band rocked, Biff Byford trotted out his hilarious Sylvester Stallone impression a couple times, and it was eight of the best dollars I ever spent. Such a great band! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

That's pretty good...not the "look how loud we can crunch our guitar" heavy metal.

Yeah, Saxon has always been kind of that way. They're heavy, but not just for the sake of being heavy.
