I Declared Bankruptcy!

Wasn't the route I wanted to take, but had no other option. I was paying credit card debt, interest charges, and being influenced by someone to go do things that cost money, buy fancy stuff, and loaned money to them left right and centre. Plus I had to give 10% as a "tithe" to the congregation I was going to or else there would have been an onslaught of guilt trips. The reason why I'm sharing this with you is because I want to encourage you. You are not alone. It's not a shame. It is an action that one must take when circumstances go beyond our control. During the past year I've learned a lot about myself. Establishing a budget was the first thing I did. I got to see where my money was going and how much was coming in. Then the tough choices came rolling in. I ended up giving up things that I realised I didn't need after all. I was surprised at all the subscriptions I was paying into. After having a few pow-wows with my family, I began cutting things out slowly but surely. And while a lot of you may think it a huge sacrifice, it's not really. It's like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. As I was making these tough decisions I began to notice some character changes. I found myself appreciating the simple things in life. I wasn't so drawn in to the latest gadgets, the latest fashions, the latest trends. I see consumerism on a whole new level - how buying quality is good, and not useless crap that we buy at the dollar store. I've also become more responsible in managing my things, recycling, donating, and simply stopped buying on impulse. Last but not least, I became more self aware of my emotions, and not only empathise, but actually relate to others going through the same thing. I can be a support for people who wants help. I've had a lovely lady sit with me throughout my bankruptcy process. She's also been there, done that herself, and am grateful for her support. If you have decared bankruptcy, how did it change your lives? I'd love to hear your stories! :)

The question I ask myself is what would I have done if I didn't have the credit cards!!! I would not have paid 259.00 for boots or a vase with flowers!! These days I'm doing the same thing and making it fairly well!! Still run short still!!! Gonna start back a savings account!!! If I don't have 2 use it for something!!

That's really great. I only wish I would have gotten support way before I sunk deeper into debt. I was literally pished to buy stuff, I went shopping with a friend the shopping was fun, but when the cashier rang up my total it was more than I could afford so I started to say I was going to put back a few items my friend said no you are going to buy them. Totally embarrassing. I paid the cashier and we left but needless to say I never went shopping with her again, nor is she my friend.

@db20747 ach I'm so sorry to hear that. The shoes and dresses were for me she was trying to make me look classy, but still other times she's racked up about $1500 in debt to me over a period of 4 years omg one excuse after another. :( Can totally relate.

@Masihi This is what happened to me!! We went shopping at Nordstrum and Lord and Taylor!!! Then she borrowed my credit card and was only supposed to send 50 and pay it back!! She went way over!! Like 900 .00 over!! When i saw her a few years later to ask for a little money back she snubbed me and gave a little grin and mosied off!! People sure know how 2 have fun with YOUR Money!!!

Thanks, Jo. I believe that in every situation life throws at us, it builds character. Even though things go tough, it'll make you stronger in the long run. I've learned to be resiliant, to never give up.
