What do you think is meant by "filmy"?

I have just read a self-description on Twitter that reads: I have a cool, funny and filmy personality. What on earth could he mean by a filmy personality? I haven't a clue!

Filmy means over dramatic.. So any one who is over dramatic is called filmy.. I don't know why as in some films they do realistic acting and don't do over acting..

The proper meaning of the word is 'very thin or nearly transparent' or 'diaphonous', which is not really how most people would want to describe their character! I agree that it probably is intended to mean something like 'dramatic' (though I also think that it is not a way anyone with any sense would want to describe themself!)

@owlwings I agree.. See the proper meaning is what you said but when people talk about some one's character they mean it in that way.. Sometimes people also say, I am filmy just to say they are as romantic as the characters in movies.. That is how people use the term.. While talking about others they could mean dramatic in a negative way as well...

@Sheali I think that using the word 'filmy' in the sense you describe would be considered 'slang' in England. It very much depends on where the person is from and therefore, what culture and age group they fit into. It is worth remembering that Indian English is a dialect, just as are American English and Standard British English.

I only know 'flimsy'. But this adjective isn't used to describe personality, is it?

If it were, it would not be complimentary! A flimsy structure is one which is likely to fall down at any moment! I really don't know what this person is trying to convey, but in any case, someone who describes themself as 'cool and funny' is very liable not to be, in my book!

@owlwings I see that differently. I know that I come over as cool in many situations. I may be agitated but it rarely shows. It's a quality I did nothing for to get but I'm very grateful that I have it. It's extremely useful for a teacher. A teacher who loses his or her calm, has a hard life. I have it in writing in school mags that I'm cool. A better label is hard to get. With 'funny' it's a bit different. Whether a person is seen as funny, depends very much on the other side. I live in a part of Germany where people laugh a lot. Yet, I often don't know what about. When I say something which is really funny - even if I say so myself - I often earn no reaction at all or a "Now, what do you mean by that?" In other parts of the country the reactions would be quite different.

@MALUSE @owlwings so many words have more than oine meaning. Cool can mean calm, not hot-headed, serene and unagitated. Or it can mean trendy, fashionable, hip and with it. Of course funny can also be interpreted in at least two ways as well.

I have no idea, really, John! Usually 'filmy' means something like 'semi-transparent' or 'as a transparent film over something'. To say that [some]one had a 'filmy personality' wouldn't exactly be a compliment! I suspect that, unless they have made a spelling mistake, this person means that they think that they would be good on film (or in a movie, if we use American terminology). I don't think that I'd rush to meet this person, really. People who describe themselves as 'cool and funny' generally aren't and, if what I think 'filmy' is meant to mean in this context, that would translate (for me) as showy and superficial!

@owlwings I amjust giving an example.. Generally in movies they show people celebrating things in a very large scale which a common man doesn't do. But what if a common man does it like that because he sees that in movies and is carried away by those ideas.... Another example is singing in the middle of the road.. This happens in Bollywood movies and if some one in reality does that out of excitement, people would say he is filmy.. I hope I am able to explain my views

I would think that he believes himself to be very transparent. He is..he is a fool.
