my understanding is top-rated is based on number of likes, hot is based on numbers of responses and comments, while interesting is based on tags. what will show up in your interesting list is not the same as mine and other mylotters.

everyone has their own experience according to me top rated is one whose attract most like and discussion and interesting are the new ones discussion the getting attention of many user that posted recently..i don't know about hot one...but these are only my opinion and guess...in short all overlap with each other
