Damn, it seems I am all over the place today. I am counting down my favorite songs with "Town," "City," "State," and "Country" in the title, and we are already at the "State" part of today's discussion. We are at #4: "Another State of Mind" by Social Distortion. While they certainly have their detractors (just check out the comments on the link I've provided below,) there's no denying that Fullerton, California's Social Distortion has had an impact on punk rock since vocalist/guitarist Mike Ness formed the band in 1978. By integrating rockabilly and country influences into their punk sound, the band has achieved a modicum of mainstream success while maintaining a loyal fanbase within the punk community. "Another State of Mind" was the only single released from Social Distortion's 1983 debut album, Mommy's Little Monster (a classic punk record, as far as I'm concerned.) Ness wrote the tune after a 1982 North American tour, mainly about missing his girlfriend as he and his band struggled with the hardships of being on the road (face it. They were probably touring in a van, living in it, unloading, setting up, tearing down, and loading their own equipment, and facing, on a nightly basis, a subculture that can become downright hostile if they don't like your music. Punk rockers like what they like, and are very steadfast in their loyalty. They also won't hesitate to call B.S.) Meanwhile, I've always admired Mike Ness' honesty. I have to say, I am one of the people that love this band! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
