Living more simply

I'm in the midst of living more simply and learning old skills that women utilised for thousands of years but got lost in the age of consumerism. Well, almost. Nowadays more people are making their own soap and are writing blogs about it. Not only that, people are switching to cloth diapers and wipes rather than to buy disposables. We are cooking from scratch now in our home. Knitting, crocheting, and sewing almost became a lost skill with the rise of industries making ready-made things cheaper for consumers. It's time to go back to that. Before the consumerism age which kicked off on a grand scale with the help of the Industrial Revolution. Why? With our countries going deeper into debt how much longer will the gov't be able to support those of us who are disabled or elderly? Monthly cheques will decrease, I can see that happening. Maybe not now, but maybe in the next 20 years or so. And those who work...I still think everyone should learn skills that will help us to live self-efficiently. There's do much mire about this, I can write a whole big article on this. But I'll stop here, just food for thought. What is your attitude towards consumerism?

I grew up in post-war Germany, in the GDR (German Democratic Republic). People were happy if they had enough, the bare necessities. I wasn't a spoilt child. I didn't change when we moved to West Germany and by and by could afford a bit more than was necessary. I can sew, knit, crochet, do embroidery and some other techniques. I haven't used any of these techniques for some time, though. One needs only so and so many pullovers. :-)

Ya, that's true enough. I can do basic things and would love to get further advanced. I know by hand, though, as I don't have enough eyesight to use a sewing machine. I admit my 2 oldest are spoiled and they won't do house chores but my 5 month old daughter will be raised in a frugal minimalist home.
